Oddly, Google Places does not recommend an image size for your listings logo – or mention which image will appear as your logo.
I have found that the best image size to use when creating local listings is 220 pixels wide by 155 pixels tall. This is the MINIMUM size I would recommend! This should also be the first image you upload, as they will use your first image as your logo.
The reason I choose this size as being ideal: when your logo is displayed with other listings it will be resized to 85×60 pixels. When viewing your Google Places page, your image will be resized to have a width of 220 pixels (and a variable height). If your image were to be small than 220 pixels wide, it would be scaled up on your places page and appear pixelated.
By making your image exactly 220×155, your logo will look its very best when being displayed on your full listing. When resized to 85×60, your image will still look good because the image will retain the same ratio (44:31).
Take a look at the logo we use on Google Places:
We could have made our image wide to accommodate the long logo, but then our logo would have been illegible when scaled to 85×60 (or worse, our logo would be cropped and only show the first few letters of our name).
Updated April 2012: Although we have changed our logo, the image sizes above are still accurate.
